In a nation where women are revered as embodiments of strength and wisdom, the stark reality of their daily struggles paints a grim picture. Despite being worshipped as goddesses like Durga, Sarasvati, and Parvati, women continue to face the heinous crimes of rape, abuse, and exploitation. This dichotomy between adoration and mistreatment highlights a deep-rooted societal issue that cannot be ignored.

The most important members of our society, is women, find themselves without the respect and protection they deserve. Their constitutional rights are trampled upon, casting a shadow over every aspect of their lives. Women, being the architects of families and, ultimately, of societies and nations, play a pivotal role in shaping the fabric of our communities. Therefore, any dishonor inflicted upon them reverberates throughout the entire social structure, tarnishing the very essence of our collective identity.

Last year, a heinous crime shook the state of Manipur, leaving an indelible scar on the Kuki community. A young woman was subjected to a horrific ordeal of naked parading, beating, and abuse by a mob. Shockingly, the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has revealed a disturbing truth: the police themselves handed the woman over to her predators.

On August 12, 2022, communal violence erupted in Manipur's Tamenglong district. During the chaos, a 23-year-old Kuki woman was brutally attacked by a mob. She was stripped naked, beaten with sticks and stones, and paraded through the streets. The horrific incident was captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparking outrage across the country.

In the aftermath of the attack, the victim approached the police for help. However, instead of providing protection, the police allegedly handed her over to the same group of people who had assaulted her. The CBI chargesheet has confirmed this shocking allegation, stating that the police officers involved "failed to discharge their statutory duty to protect the victim."

CBI Investigation

The CBI took over the investigation into the case in October 2022. The chargesheet, filed in February 2023, names 15 accused, including 10 police officers. The charges include murder, attempt to murder, rioting, and abetment of crime.

The chargesheet alleges that the police officers "deliberately and intentionally" handed the victim over to her attackers. It further states that the officers "failed to take any action to prevent the commission of the crime" and "failed to apprehend the accused persons."

Impact on the Kuki Community

The naked parading and abuse of the Kuki woman has had a profound impact on the entire Kuki community. It has shaken their trust in the police and the justice system. The community has expressed outrage and demanded accountability for the perpetrators and those who enabled them.

Demand for Justice

The Kuki community and human rights organizations are demanding justice for the victim and punishment for all those responsible. They have called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the accused police officers.

The naked parading of the Kuki woman is a shameful chapter in Manipur's history. The CBI chargesheet has exposed the complicity of the police in this horrific crime. It is a betrayal of public trust and a violation of the fundamental rights of the victim.

The government of Manipur and the police department must take immediate action to ensure that justice is served. The accused police officers must be held accountable for their actions, and measures must be put in place to prevent such incidents from happening again. The Kuki community deserves justice, and the entire country must stand with them in their fight for accountability and dignity.

The recent events of violence in Manipur have not only exposed the vulnerability of women but also the apathy of the government in addressing such atrocities. This silence in the face of injustice is a stain on the conscience of our society and nation. India, a land rich in culture, tradition, and modernity, stands diminished when incidents like these go unchecked.

It is imperative that we, as responsible citizens, raise our voices against these perpetrators of crime. The predators who dare to violate the dignity of women must face swift and stringent punishment. Only then can we create a society where no man dares to harm the honor of a woman in our country.

Furthermore, it is disheartening to note the silence of the Women's National Commission in the wake of such grave injustices. Their inaction is a reflection of a larger systemic failure to protect and uphold the rights of women. It is a shameful neglect that cannot be excused.
