River Savitry polluted
The industrial zone in Raigad district has eventually become unsafe to the villagers as well as workers. Since a decade, hundreds of incidents have reported from this MIDC area. In most cases, worker had succumbed to his injuries, and cases have never been came to light. Either it is hushed up or detained by political intervention.
Thousands of poor tribal family’s livelihood are at stake owing to the pollution of the river, specially fish, have also been destroyed due to deadly chemical effluents.
Last year, a serious incident had occurred in Mahad MIDC, reportedly two workers had sustained a serious burns and one of them succumbed to his injuries while taking a treatment at Mumbai hospital. It is learnt that workers had not been provided any safety measures to protect themselves from injuries in the factory while handling hazardous materials.
The river pollution is a growing threat in the district. Almost all major rivers have virtually polluted, leading to several hazardous upshot. Chemical factories in Mahad tahesil ( of Raigad district in Maharashtra ) has grossly affected thousands of people of this region, specially, the farmers.
The villages falling along the pipeline (which carry the effluents) has badly affected water sources of these villages, such as well, bore-wells have been polluted due to leakage in pipelines at various places. The pipeline lying along the roadside have also caused a massive damage to the paddy fields of the poor farmers. When chemical wastage leaked out of the pipeline, this effluents spreads over to the entire surroundings and damaged hundreds of acre fertile land, in the recent years.
About 22 villages in Mahad tahesil of this district has been directly affected due to chemical wastages from the factories. Chemical effluent is being drained into river Savitry, near Ovale village, just 15 km. from Mumbai-Goa national highway.
People had also rose up and took to the streets in protests, but all efforts were failed. Even, some local news papers had also raised the issues , several time but either it is hushed up or detained by the political intervention. Concerned authorities are extremely lackadaisical to redress people’s grievances. On the other hand, most of the villagers of this area, are poor farmers and they do not get enough time to frequent the offices, meanwhile the problem remains unsolved.
Industrial and technical development have done immense harm to our environment. . industrial growth is necessary for our well-being and progress. But this industrial growth also possesses the great potential of causing irreversible damage to our ecology and environment. Water, air and soil and other such sources are limited, they are not renewable. Therefore, it becomes imperative that they are protected, and kept safe from the onslaught of industrial and other pollutants.
Industry in our country hardly pays any attention towards pollution control measures and treatment of effluents before discharge in to rivers and seas. There should be strict laws enjoining industries to compensate adequately any damage done to environment.
